What is Scrabble?

Each player has a private rack of tiles. On your turn, build one connected word line on the shared board, score it, and draw back toward seven tiles.

The highest final score wins. It is a free-for-all: each person plays alone.

How to play

Six moves. A bad word is rejected immediately. There is no challenge.

  1. 01

    Draw your tiles

    Start with 7 tiles.

  2. 02

    Build a word

Place tiles in one row or column.

  3. 03

    Connect to the board

The first word covers the center star. Later words must connect to existing tiles.

  4. 04

    Play Word

The server validates every word and calculates your score.

  5. 05

    Draw back to 7

Refill your rack while tiles remain in the bag.

  6. 06

    Pass, swap, or play

    Choose your move each turn.

Every word formed, including words that cross, has to be in the dictionary. Play Word is what commits the move.

The board

A 15×15 grid. Premium squares score only when a new tile covers them.

Center star

The opening word must cover it. On that play it scores as a double word.

  • Triple word · 8
  • Double word · 16 + center star
  • Triple letter · 12
  • Double letter · 24

A tile already on the board does not trigger that square again.

Tiles and scoring

100 English tiles. Seven on your rack. A blank scores 0, and the letter you choose stays fixed.

Playing all 7 tiles in one turn adds 50. A shorter rack does not earn that bonus.

Rules

What the server accepts. The live board shows the score before you commit.

Placement
  • New tiles must be in one row or one column.
  • There cannot be gaps inside the played span.
  • After the opening move, at least one new tile must touch an existing tile on a side.
  • Corner-only contact does not count.
  • Every formed word must be valid, including cross words.
  • Words must be at least 2 letters.
Dictionary
  • Collins Official Scrabble Words 2024 (CSW24).
  • One dictionary only.
  • Words are checked before the move is kept.
  • A bad word is rejected immediately and never stays on the board.
  • There is no challenge.
Pass
  • Scores 0.
  • Tiles you placed return to your rack.
  • Counts toward the six scoreless turns.
Swap
  • Exchange selected rack tiles with the bag.
  • The bag must contain at least as many tiles as you exchange.
  • The turn ends and counts as scoreless.
Timers
  • Optional. One clock per turn.
  • Off, or 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, or 45 minutes.
  • When time expires, the turn passes and counts as scoreless.
  • The host can pause the clock and resume it with the same time left.

Bots

Optional seats. The level changes how far the bot searches. Speed only changes how long it waits before moving.

  • Easy

Plays the highest score it sees.

  • Normal

Plays a strong legal word and keeps a playable rack.

  • Hard

Looks a little further and balances the tiles it keeps.

  • Expert

Looks ahead and protects the better rack.

  • Smartest

The widest search: bingos, the rack you leave, and a short endgame.

Smartest is the strongest search. The dictionary decides whether a word is legal. A bot that cannot move passes.

Winning

Highest final score wins. Equal scores share the win.

Last tile, empty bag

The player who empties their rack adds the face value of every other rack. Everyone else subtracts their own leftover tiles.

Six scoreless turns

A pass, a swap, a timed-out turn, and a word worth 0 all count. Each player then subtracts their own leftover tiles.

One player left

Resigning until one player remains ends the game. That player wins on the scores already recorded.

Watching

Extra people can watch. They see the board, scores, bag count, history, and letter count. They cannot place tiles, pass, swap, or resign.
