Charades

What is Charades?

One player, the Describer, sees a secret word or short phrase and describes it. Teammates type guesses. An exact match scores 1 point and ends the turn.

The first team to reach the host’s target wins.

How to play

Six steps from the lobby to the winning point.

01

Form your team

At least 2 players are required on each team.

02

Start the turn

A Describer receives a secret word.

03

Describe

The Describer talks or types clues.

04

Guess

Teammates type their guesses.

05

Solve

An exact match scores 1 point and ends the turn.

06

Race to the target

The first team to reach the target wins.

Wrong guesses do not subtract points. A skipped, fouled, ended, or expired turn scores 0. There is a 5-second break between turns.

Roles

Describer and Guesser change every turn. Moderator is an optional seat outside the teams.

Describer

  • Sees the secret word
  • Gives clues
  • Can skip or end the turn
  • Cannot guess

Guesser

  • Cannot see the secret word
  • Types guesses
  • Can ask questions or request another clue

Moderator

  • Optional
  • Sits outside every team
  • Can call a foul or end a side
  • Human only

Spectator

  • Watches the game
  • Can participate in predictions when voting is open

Game modes

Two ways to play. Blitz is a shared word for every team, not a shorter Classic clock.

Classic

Teams take turns on their own words.

  • One shared clock, or no clock.
  • Default clock: 60 seconds.
  • Presets: 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, or 180 seconds.
  • Custom time from 5 seconds to 60 minutes.

Blitz

Every team races the same word at the same time.

  • Each team gets its own Describer.
  • Clues and guesses stay private to that team’s lane.
  • One shared clock: 15, 30, 60, or 90 seconds. Default is 30.
  • The first accepted correct guess scores 1 and ends the word for everyone.
  • A skip, a foul, or the Describer ending the turn removes only that team. The others keep the word.
  • When the shared clock runs out, the word ends and nobody scores.

Rules

Open a group for the detail. The short line is the rule that matters.

CluesShowOne word per turn. A typed clue cannot give the answer away.
  • One word per turn.
  • A typed clue cannot say the answer, a piece of it, or its spelling, rhyme, sound, or length.
  • Spoken speech is not checked by the server.
  • A human Moderator can call a foul.
GuessesShowAn exact match scores 1. A wrong guess scores nothing.
  • An exact match scores 1.
  • Wrong guesses score nothing.
  • Matching ignores case, accents, punctuation, spacing, and a leading “a”, “an”, or “the”.
  • Plurals, typos, and extra words do not match.
TurnShowA correct answer ends the turn. Everything else on this list scores 0.
  • A correct answer scores 1 point and the turn ends.
  • Skip scores 0.
  • A foul scores 0.
  • The clock running out scores 0.
  • The Describer ending the turn scores 0.

Settings

The host sets these in the lobby, before the match starts.

Target score

The host picks 5, 10, 15, or 20 points. The default is 10.

Clock

Classic can run with no clock, or with the turn times above. Blitz always uses its own shared clock.

Word packs

Six built-in packs: General, Animals, Food, Objects, Places, and Actions. All of them start on.

Play on for places

This starts on. The first team to the target takes 1st, and the others keep playing for later places. The host can end the game at 1st instead.

Seating

A lobby choice, not a game mode. Players sit themselves, or the host can auto-balance, deal teams at random, or run a draft.
